MENTAL FITNESS: A NECESSITY

Wednesday, July 21, 2010
Are you aware of mental health? This may sound a simple question, but many of us may not know the correct answer. Mental health is the way we think, we feel, we cope up with adverse situations. All can adjust to favorable conditions but mental health plays its role when we are to face some undesirable conditions. All get annoyed, disturbed, sad, stressed while facing problems. But, for some, this stress increases to a great extent.  They suffer from many disorders like depression, phobias, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia that do not allow them to behave normally.

According to WHO, mental health can be defined as a “state of well being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses
of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”. From here it is clear that mental health does not imply the absence of mental disorder.

Have a break from your daily worries and tensions. Dedicating even a short time to your medical fitness can work wonders. Here are top 6 tips that can help you to achieve mental fitness:

  • Experience positivity in your life
Sit quietly whenever you are feeling depressed and stressed and remember the moments when someone has praised you. Recall the pleasure, comfort, confidence that you have felt that day.

  • Day dream:
This may look ridiculous to some, but it works. Inhale and exhale slowly and deeply. Try to experience the pleasure you have felt while you were at beach, hilltop and let the peace and tranquility surround you.

  • Face the opposition
Learn to interact with negative thoughts and opposition. Never try to avoid them but face them boldly. Never allow the problem to wrap you.

  • Talk to yourself
Whenever you are surrounded with lots of negative thoughts, try to overcome them. Best way is to stand in front of the mirror and talk with you. This divides your tensions and worries and you will feel better.

  • Appreciate yourself
You often expect others that they should appreciate you on any good work. But, how many times you have appreciated yourself? You too need to praise yourself. Praise yourself if you are looking good. This boosts up your confidence and makes you feel better.

  • Have a goal
Here goal does not refer to any ambitious achievement but simple day to day talks. Have a goal to wake up early, plan exercise, go for walk. Meeting your day to day goal will make you feel happy.
